Fabric Requirements for T-shirt Quilts

(Instructions to make a t-shirt quilt are at www.goosetracks.com)

The following fabric yardage requirements were calculated using QuiltFab.  QuiltFab is a free fabric calculator utility application for the Apple iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, available at the Apple App Store as QuiltFab. Find out more about the QuiltFab app and other quilting apps by searching Mobile Quilting Tools on Facebook.

Fabric requirements are determined based on the following assumptions:

T-shirt squares will be 14 1/2 inches finished size.  All seam allowances are 1/4".

Fabric: The following calculations are based on quilt fabric that is approximately 40" wide after shrinkage. You may want to buy a little more just to be safe.

Sashing: The fabric strips that are used to separate the blocks within the quilt are called sashing. The fabric requirements are for sashing strips cut on the crosswise grain, selvage to selvage and pieced where required.  If you have directional prints, or want to center or match repeating motifs, additional fabric will be needed.

Borders:  This assumes a single border that is pieced and finished square, not mitered.   The fabric requirements are for  border strips cut on the crosswise grain, selvage to selvage.  If you have directional prints, or want to center or match repeating motifs, additional fabric will be needed.

Backing: This assumes backing fabric will be cut with the lengths running top to bottom, the long way, using multiple widths. If more than one length is needed, the last length, if narrow enough, can be pieced by using a shorter length of fabric, cutting it in half or thirds along the length, and joining the pieces, end to end.  An extra 2 inches all around (overhang) is typical for a hand or machine quilted quilt.  For long arm quilting, 3-6 inches overhand is required.  The measurement given includes a 3 inch overhang.

Binding:  This assumes a straight grain vs. bias-cut binding, with diagonally cut ends for joining strips, and mitered corners. A French fold binding is typically used, meaning that the fabric is folded in half lengthwise, sewn with a generous quarter-inch seam along the front side of the quilt, and turned over to the back of the quilt for final hand stitching. The binding strips are cut 2 3/4" wide. If you use a single-thickness binding, or need a narrower or wider binding, you will need to adjust the cut width of the binding fabric.
